Six Impossible Things Before Breakfast

And Moses said, “I will turn aside and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt.” - Exodus 3:3 For twenty or so years I’ve been going on “Franciscan road trips” with my friend Norberta who has authority to lead outings like this because she’s Franciscan nun. To begin a Franciscan road trip you have to go far enough away from home that you don’t know where you are. This takes Norberta and me almost no time at all because neither of us has a sense of direction. Then, at each intersection, you arbitrarily decide to turn left, right or go straight in the hopes of getting more lost. I called to ask Norberta if she made this game up or if it’s really some kind of Franciscan formation

At night some times when I can’t sleep I think about the sycamore tree in my childhood back yard. With my eyes closed I remember exactly how to climb it to get to the door my father wedged into its branches. Please never leave a voicemail for me with the words “I have something important to tell you.” at the end without giving a hint about what it is. Sure, you could want to tell me you’re getting married. But you could also say you’re moving to Montreal. Thankfully I have regular evidence that looking at life this way is sill

“….who shut in the sea with doors, when it burst forth from the womb; when I made clouds its garment, and thick darkness its swaddling band, and prescribed bounds for it, and set bars and doors, and said, ‘Thus far shall you come, and no farther, and here shall your proud waves be stayed’? -Job 38: 8-11 No matter how deeply I soak the ground there’s no doubt that the cucumber vines in my garden are drying up and the green tomatoes are stuck; not dying but not ripening either. Some of the maple leaves in the park where I go running are tipped in red and the cicadas aren’t chanting from the late afternoon into the deep evening any more. When did they stop? Maybe
